Executive Summary
This study quantified the economic impact of the annual operating expenditures by skilled nursing 21,112 Jobs
homes in the State of Mississippi during Fiscal Year 2022. To conduct this study, a research team at
Mississippi State University’s Stennis Institute of Government obtained the Skilled Nursing Facility Supported Annually
Cost Report for Fiscal Year 2022 from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid. This database con-
tained data for 173 nursing homes in 81 Mississippi counties with 15,870 skilled nursing beds. The
Stennis research team used an IMPLAN® econometric input-output model that geographically con-
strained impacts to those within the state of Mississippi. Using this restrained modeling approach, this
study found that the operating expenditures made by Mississippi skilled nursing homes during Fiscal
Year 2022 supported 21,112 full-time equivalent jobs with associated labor income of $998,913,853. $998.9 Million
Skilled nursing homes in Mississippi provide multiple opportunities for employees to engage in of Labor Income
professional development programs and training to develop skills that enable employees to improve
their income and advance their career as members of the professional healthcare workforce. Generated Yearly
Mississippi’s nursing homes offer multiple training and competency evaluation programs that incen-
tivize workers to learn on the job and earn higher salaries as they advance through training to become
certified nursing assistants (CNAs). Employees also have many opportunities to engage in training and
educational programs that prepare them to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN), or to advance to
becoming a registered nurse (RN) while remaining at work in a nursing home. Unlike many other $1.27 billion
professions, healthcare workers in Mississippi nursing homes do not have to leave work to obtain the
technical skills and education that is required for them to advance their career as healthcare Value-Added
professionals. Starting with providing opportunities for low-skilled entry-level workers and advancing
from CNA to LPN to RN, nursing homes in Mississippi contribute to increasing the skills of Mississippi’s
healthcare workforce and providing opportunities for higher paying jobs.
